Catnip FAQs
What is catnip?
Catnip, also known by its botanical name Nepeta cataria, is a natural herb from the mint family. It contains a compound called nepetalactone, which triggers a response in many cats when they smell it.
What does catnip do to cats?
When exposed to catnip, cats may roll, rub, purr, zoom around, or generally act like their day just improved dramatically. Some cats become playful and energetic, while others may appear relaxed and content.
Not all cats respond to catnip. Sensitivity is genetic, so if your cat looks unimpressed, they’re not broken. Just indifferent.
Is catnip safe for cats?
Yes. Catnip is non-toxic and non-addictive. Most cats can enjoy it safely when used in moderation.
That said, some cats may become overstimulated if given too much at once. If your cat starts acting overwhelmed or grumpy, simply remove the catnip and let them chill.
How long do the effects of catnip last?
The effects usually last 10–15 minutes. After that, cats typically lose interest and won’t respond again for a short period. This “reset time” can last anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours.
Can kittens have catnip?
Most kittens under 3–6 months of age don’t respond to catnip at all. Sensitivity develops naturally as they grow, so it’s best to wait until they’re a little older before introducing it.
Can cats overdose on catnip?
Cats can’t overdose in a dangerous sense, but too much catnip can cause mild overstimulation or tummy upset. That’s why we always recommend using it sparingly.
A little goes a long way. Your cat will let you know when it’s enough.
Can cats become addicted to catnip?
No. Catnip is not addictive, and cats don’t develop dependency on it. They may enjoy it and seek it out, but there are no withdrawal effects or long-term issues.
Can catnip be used for training or enrichment?
Yes. Catnip can be a great enrichment tool. It’s commonly used to:
-
Encourage play and exercise
-
Attract cats to scratching posts or toys
-
Make new environments feel more familiar
Using catnip alongside playtime or positive experiences can help reinforce good habits.
How should catnip be stored?
To keep catnip fresh and potent:
-
Store it in a cool, dry place
-
Keep it sealed or airtight
-
Avoid direct sunlight
Once opened, curious paws may try to help themselves, so secure storage is recommended.
